Nam-Cheol Kim is a Principal Scientist to the Expert Committee on Botanical Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines in United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Nam-Cheol is responsible for development and modernization of monographs and reference standards for botanical dietary supplements, herbal medicines, and botanical drugs including Cannabis. His responsibility also includes developing collaboration with global stakeholders and international institutions for botanical quality standards. He serves as the key role in launching and managing USP’s Herbal Medicines Compendium (HMC), dedicated for global herbal medicines standards. Nam-Cheol received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Chemistry from Seoul National University in Korea, and Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago. Before join USP, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate in Research Triangle Institute and a natural product scientist in Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute and Kraft Foods. His previous research included discovery of naturally occurring low calorie sweetener compounds, drug discovery and development from plant origin, evaluation of efficacy and toxicity for botanical dietary supplements, analytical method developments for toxic metabolites, and application of analytical/metabolomic techniques to food flavor and nutrition research. He is the author and co-author of 26 scientific publications including research articles, invited book chapters and reviews, and co-author of four US and international patents. He is a frequent invited speaker in various international conferences and training programs on herbal medicines and botanical dietary supplements. He is a long-time member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and former Assistant Treasurer of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP).
