With the shift in health paradiams, there has been an increasing demand for health functional foods, accompanied by a steady rise in the number of applications for functional ingredient approval. This presentation aims to analyze recent cases of functional ingredient application reviews, highlight frequently encountered requests for supplementary information, and provide specific guidance on the significance of these requests and the required submitted materials. Through this, we intend to assist industry practitioners in effectively preparing supplementary documents for approval applications. Additionally, we will introduce improvements to the functional ingredient approval precedure system to enhance the efficiency of the application process.

With the continued growth of the health functional food industry, applications and approvals for functional ingredients have steadily increased. To enhance developers’ understanding of evaluation procedures, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has been actively revising and developing functional evaluation guidelines in alignment with current scientific and technological standards. This presentation introduces recent trends in the recognition of functional ingredients and highlights major revisions to evaluation guidelines. The aim is to provide practical insights for both developers and regulatory professionals in the field.
